Employment Law Group
Pursuant to its long-established motto of humani alienum nihil, the Employment Law Group (ELG) was founded in 1977 further to educate individuals with an interest in learning about employment law in Scotland, England and Wales.
The purpose of the ELG is to educate and stimulate interest in all aspects of Employment law by means of educational conferences at which the Members of the ELG are educated and provided with the environment and ambience to allow discussion about Employment law. ELG Conferences keep those who practise employment law up to date in the law and best practice and aware of related issues and developments, leaving them better equipped to advise their clients.
The ELG has had a very wide variety of topics and speakers over the years, from Lord Justice Elias, all the serving EAT Presidents from North and South of the border, and the top ET Judges, to the highest-rated QCs from legendary figures such as Eldred Tabachnik and James Goudie to contemporary stars like David Reade, Brian Napier and Caspar Glyn. We have had academics, practising employment lawyers, in-house lawyers, ET wing members, and politicians. Many of the speakers hail from our own membership.
The Employment Law Group was established in Scotland by a small number of solicitors who were engaging in the then rather new world of employment, in 1977, a fact reflected in the Group’s original name, the Industrial Law Group.
The group meets four times a year, generally on the following dates: First Friday in March | First Friday in June | First Friday in October | First Friday in December
Other than the June Conference which is a day Conference, the Conferences are residential, with the Conference on the Friday, but networking available from the Thursday evening to the Saturday morning other than in respect of the October Conference when it closes after the final presentation on the Friday afternoon. Many of our delegates will depart immediately after the Friday conference though and there is no obligation to stay, should delegates prefer to attend only for the Conference.
The management committee works hard to keep down the costs so as to avoid increasing the membership fee from the current rate of £850 (no VAT) per year. The membership fee includes meals and accommodation at the residential conferences (provided these have been booked by the member). Members are welcome to substitute a delegate colleague in their place.
Accommodation must be booked via the ELG Secretary who contacts members approximately 4-6 weeks before the conference for this purpose. Given the cost involved, accommodation should not be booked unless it is going to be used.
